Year 5 designed their own Anglo-Saxon clothing based on the materials that would have been used at the time.  They also made brooches using copper to replicate the method and designs used in Anglo-Saxon times.

"In our class we made some Anglo-Saxon brooches out of copper foil, different metal tools and some stick on coloured jewels. We chose copper foil because it was very thick, if it wasn’t thick enough the metal tools would have gone straight through the foil. For example, tin foil would not have worked because the metal tools would have gone straight through it. The designs on our brooches were symmetrical because the Saxons liked symmetry. The metal tools were very sharp so we could draw lots of good patterns. These materials were materials that we had never used before so we got to have a piece of copper foil to practise on before we made our brooches." - Anju and Joseph

"I chose my design so it would look like an Anglo-Saxon man. I included a brooch and a belt for tools and a sack. It was fun making the brooch and using tools to emboss the pattern that I had designed." - Rafferty

"First we studied Anglo-Saxon clothing and then designed our own outfits to show what an Anglo-Saxon person looked like. Next we designed brooches and we used our final design to put onto thin copper. We then added jewels." - Jessica
