This term Year 2 have been learning all about pirates! As well as finding out about how pirates lived, the children have been learning about famous pirates, designing and building their own pirate ships and learning traditional sea shanties. Year 2's writing for the term is linked to the pirate theme, including pirate information texts, recounts, diary entries, narratives and persuasive writing.
One pupil made a wonderful (and very tasty!) pirate ship cake from sponge, chocolate orange icing complete with treasure sweets and stowaway mice!
A magnificent pirate ship model complete with pieces of eight also sailed into school! We were lucky to have visitors Monsignor Kevin McGinnell and Hugh Williams in school, our year 2 confidently explained how they approached their creative projects including how they made the different features of a pirate ship "I used skewers and lollipop sticks to make the ladder, I knotted the string myself - the pirates would use this to climb up to the crow's nest but I don't have a crow's nest on this ship. The anchor chain is made from paperclips and they used it to tie the ship down when they went ashore."
